Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 MACRO - Canon Mount
Reg $489 - Demo Model on Sale $399
The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens can be used with wide variety of subjects and it is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. The new lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 82.5mm (3.2") and diameter 79mm (3.1"). It performs superbly even in relatively low light conditions indoors or at dusk. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which ensures fast AF speed as well as prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods. This lens is also equipped with Zoom Lock Switch that eliminates "Zoom Creep" during transportation.

Nikon AF-S DX "VR II" 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 G IF ED
$859 - in stock

This very popular Nikon lens, designed for use exclusively with Nikon DX format digital SLRs, offers a broad 18-200mm focal range for use in a variety of situations (equivalent to a 27-300 lens in 35mm format). Two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements and three aspherical lens elements minimize chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion, while ensuring high resolution and contrast. This auto-focus lens incorporates Nikon's Silent Wave Motor for fast, quiet focusing from as close as 50cm from the subject through its entire focal range. It employs a seven-blade rounded diaphragm opening that achieves a natural blur for out-of-focus elements. Other features include a manual/auto mode for rapid switching between autofocus and manual focus operation, VR II vibration reduction for longer hand-held exposures, internal focusing design for smoother focusing and improved balance and the Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) that offers superb color reproduction while minimizing ghosting and flare.

The updated "VR II" version adds a zoom lock switch.

NOTE: The 18-200mm was designed to be solely used with the smaller APS-C size image sensors of the Nikon Digital cameras. This lens will not work on Nikon digital cameras with full frame sensors or Nikon 35mm cameras.

Nikon AF-S VR 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF ED
$629- special order - usually takes 3 - 5 business days
We have a demo model in the store to play with.

Affordable Nikon "all-purpose" lens for full-frame sensors, or a moderate telephoto zoom on cropped sensor Nikon cameras. Two aspherical lenses and two ED glass elements for higher quality images. VR technology allows you to shoot in lower light conditions without a tripod, which is always handy. SWM for quiet and fast auto-focusing. Is an AF-S lens, so it's compatible with D40/D40x/D60 cameras for auto-focus. Comes with a lens hood.

OPTICAL QUALITY - This lens has been given a bit of a hard ride on the internet, and its not justified. Is it as good as the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 that costs more than 3x as much? No. But is a bad lens? No. Centre sharpness on a full-frame is very good, edges soft when wide open, and the lens gets better as you stop down to f/8, where it gives solid images. Edge-to-edge sharpness improves as you stop down to f/8 area. Nice zoom range, and VR technology make this an appealing lens for those D700 users who quite can't afford the $2000 24-70 f/2.8 lens.

One of Nikon's "gold ring" lenses, which means it is considered a "Pro" lens. Simply the best standard zoom lens you could put on a digital DX Nikon camera, and you pay for it.

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED
$1949 - special order - takes 3 to 5 business days
We have a demo model in the store to play with.

Nikon's revamped premium standard lens for full-frame sensors, or a moderate telephoto zoom on cropped sensor Nikon cameras. Critically acclaimed. Excellent resolution even at f/2.8, and sharp edge-to-edge. Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghost and flare. Rubber mount seal for a certain degree of weather-proofing. Three aspherical lenses and three ED glass elements for higher quality images. SWM for quiet and fast auto-focusing. Is an AF-S lens, so it's compatible with D40/D40x/D60 cameras for auto-focus. Comes with a lens hood and soft case.

OPTICAL QUALITY - Spectacular. Best performance at f/2.8 we've ever seen from a standard lens. Edge-to-edge sharpness is excellent at f/2.8, which usually it is not very good. Stopping down only makes it better, but not by much. Better than the Canon 24-70 L lens. Bottom line - if you have a full-frame Nikon, and you got the money, this is the best standard lens out there. Only drawback - a bit on the heavy size. And the cost.

Marumi Lens Hood EW-60C/D - $19 - in stock
Canon Lens Hood EW-60C - $29 - special order - usually takes up to 10 days

Canon's update to their standard kit lens add improved optics and image stabilization. Canon's latest optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology provides up to 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. Photographers normally shooting handheld at 1/250 sec can switch on IS to obtain a similarly steady and blur-free result with a shutter speed of just 1/15 second. The inclusion of automatic panning detection makes it easier for photographers to track wildlife and other moving subjects. To ensure consistently accurate results at all zoom positions, the IS system within each lens has been optimised for that lens' specific focal length range. Since the IS system is based within the lens, the results are visible through the viewfinder when framing the image.

OPTICAL QUALITY: With improved optics, this lens is now quite good, and the addition of image stabilization is a bonus. Overall sharpness is good, and edge-to-edge sharpness is good as well. Only complaint is the cheap plastic feel to the lens, which is standard in this price bracket. Zoom range is a little limiting (18-55), but for longer reach you need to go up to it's big brother, the 17-85mm, and go up significantly in cost. For its price, a good choice for Canon shooters. You won't be unhappy with this lens.

NOTE: The 18-55mm was designed to be solely used with the smaller APS-C size image sensors of the Canon Rebel/Rebel XT/20D/30D/40D. This lens will not work on Canon 35mm cameras or Canon D-SLR with full frame sensors.

This easy-to-use standard zoom lens can cover a large zoom area ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm portrait-length telephoto, and its Image Stabilizer Technology steadies camera shake up to three stops. Constructed with one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses, this lens minimizes chromatic aberration and distortion. The result is excellent picture quality, even at wide apertures. Canon's ring-type USM gives silent but quick AF, along with full-time manual focus. Moreover, with dust- and moisture-resistant construction, this is a durable yet sophisticated lens that meets the demands of advanced amateur photographers and professional photographers alike.

OPTICAL QUALITY - This is the most popular lens for 5D buyers as it combines a nice range with IS technology. Optically, it is an equal with the 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, with results being virtually identical. Like most Canon lenses, Lens is weakest at its widest setting of 24mm, and if you spend a lot of time there you may want to shoot with the 17-40 or 16-35 instead. Sharpens up as you get to 28 and keeps it there. A little softer at the top end of 105mm, which again is normal for most lenses. For Canon full frame shooters, this is the lens to get.
