Nikon's re-vamp of the popular D80, with more mega-pixels, bigger and better LCD screen, and sensor-cleaning. Think of it as a baby D300. We have clips of the much-talked about movie mode in store to look at.
MOVIE MODE NOTES:
The Nikon D90 shoots HD Video (1280x760) at 24 fps in an AVI Motion-JPEG
Codec, as well as other SD sizes. Clip length is limited to 5 minutes
max for HD, 20 minutes for other sizes (this is due to FAT32 limitations
of the SD cards). Autofocus is not available when recording, so you
either have to auto-focus before you start recording, or manually focus
during recording. Since it utilizes Live View for video recording,
you can't use the viewfinder for video. No audio inputs available for
mic inputs.
DV SHOP'S THOUGHTS ON THE D90 MOVIE MODE:
This feels like very early days in adding movies to SLR cameras,
so while it's interesting, there are many drawbacks to making it a serious
tool for videographers.
First, the good points: 24fps, HD quality video - very film-like. Image quality on static shots is pretty good. Beautiful LCD Screen. The ability to use a large stable of lenses, not only from Nikon, but third party companies as well. Once you get the hang of Live View and pre-focusing (which isn't very hard), it becomes very easy to record video.
The bad points: Image quality is good for static shots, but once you start moving too much, you run the risk of "jello-cam" as the on-board chips can't handle the information, such as rapid pans or zooms. AVI Motion JPEG codec is hardly cutting edge, and for Mac users you'll have to transcode the footage to something else to edit with. That beautiful LCD screen becomes very impractical in normal shooting conditions, and you very quickly wish for a tiltable screen. The exposure changes constantly in auto mode, and the lack of auto-focus quickly becomes a problem for run-and-gun shooting. Once you use it for 5 minutes, you become very aware it's not a video camera, and all those features you took for granted on your video camera become missed very quickly.
Overall, think of the video feature on the D90 as a step-up in quality from the video mode in point-and-shoot cameras, but not a serious rival for even consumer HD camcorders, such as the Canon HV30. More a convenience to shoot a quick video clip when you're on vacation, than to shoot a professional project with.
